SUMMARY:Solo Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:Solo Piano Recital with Nicholas McCarthy\nOn 6 June one of Britain’s most inspiring pianists\, Nicholas McCarthy\, will give a recital at St Cecilia’s Hall in Edinburgh. The only left-hand-only pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music in its 130-year history\, McCarthy has become a great champion for disabled musicians and composers\, including the RPS-Shortlisted Concerto for Left Hand by Ben Lunn. Highlights of this concert will include the World Premiere of a new work commissioned by Drake Music Scotland from rising young composer\, Joe Stollery. \nMcCarthy has made a name for himself internationally as the natural champion for repertoire\, for one hand\, and this recital will demonstrate the wealth and variety of works demonstrating the uniqueness and highly virtuosic nature of the repertoire that exists. \n“So many of the pieces commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein in the aftermath of losing his right hand in WWI were scored for massive orchestras\,” says Ben Lunn. “A part of the impetus for my own concerto for left hand for Nicholas was to create a work for smaller forces”. \n“Following on from the success of this work\, including the RPS Award shortlisting\, we knew we had to do something equally bold together. This has inspired the solo recital by Nicholas and a brand-new commission from the enigmatic Joe Stollery”. \nThis performance will include BSL Interpretation of spoken introductions and piece information. \n\nSt Cecilia’s Hall Access Information: https://www.stcecilias.ed.ac.uk/visit/#access

SUMMARY:Beyond Borders\, Beyond Barriers
DESCRIPTION:The latest event in our CREATE artist-led programme is the culmination of the Disabled Artist Network’s  Beyond Borders\, Beyond Barriers project featuring new work by six composers from England\, Scotland and Wales composed for outstanding Welsh pianist Siwan Rhys\, a leading exponent of experimental contemporary work for her instrument: (https://www.siwanrhys.co.uk) \nThrough a series of creative workshops six new pieces of music have been created exploring the sonic possibilities of the piano as an instrument that can be prepared and played in various ways and the convergence of these multiple sound worlds with other technologies\, voice and digital instruments. Going beyond borders in innovative new directions the pieces\, devised through co-creative collaborative processes\, encompass the unique ways in which neurodivergent\, hearing & visually impaired and physically disabled artists navigate and experience their internal and external worlds.   \nThe pieces are being recorded at Tŷ Cerdd the national Welsh Music Centre based in the Millennium Centre in Cardiff and performed at a concert at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  They will be released by NMC Recordings in 2024.  \nhttps://www.tycerdd.org
