After celebrating a 100% pass rate in 2010/2011 in the Midi Sequencing Unit (SCQF Level 5) which was supported by Creative Scotland‘s YMI Access & Excellence fund, last Thursday saw the launch of the Synthesis and Sampling Unit (SCQF Level 6) in partnership with Jewel & Esk College. 7 young people with a wide range of support needs and a high level of musical ability are undertaking the unit. 6 of the current students are continuing from last year and they have been joined by one participant who has undertaken individual tuition as part of the musicSPACE programme. Led by Drake a Associate Musician and College Lecturer, the course is running at full capacity and takes place in Drake Music Scotland’s fully accessible studio at SPACE, Craigmillar.
By the end of the year long course students will be able to program a range of synthesisers and samplers, either emulating the sound of different natural instruments and sounds, or to create entirely original sounds in response to a given brief. The course allows for a high level of individual interest to be explored and for support to be given due to the small group sizes. As one participant stated: “It doesn’t feel like a course. It feels like something I want to do.” Drake Music Scotland is delighted to continue the partnership with Jewel & Esk College, increasing access to music education at an advanced level.
